He emerged as a leading figure in the Reportage movement during the 1950s and early 1960s. Born in Imari, Saga Prefecture, Ikeda witnessed the rise of imperial aggression and militarist ideology during his early education, which greatly influenced his artistic expression. Despite being drafted as a kamikaze pilot during World War II, he was spared from a tragic fate when the war ended. Ikeda's artwork reflected the profound symbolism of the era, offering a contemplative exploration of the monstrous consequences unleashed upon the world.
