Tao Siqi

Tao Siqi's approach to painting stems from her quest to uncover metaphors hidden under the surface of an object. The interplay between the positive and negative aspects of an object captivates her, leading her to delve into the emotional undercurrent on the canvas.

Biography of Tao Siqi

Tao Siqi was born in Wuhan, China, in 1994. Currently, she lives and works in Shanghai.

In 2016, she recieved her BA in Painting from Hubei Institute of Fine Art in her hometown, Wuhan. 

Her noteworthy solo exhibitions include "Trembling" at Fortnight Institute in New York (2022), "Deep Water" at Clima in Milan (2022), "Tao Siqi: Tender Thorns" at Capsule Shanghai in Shanghai (2021), and "Transient" at chi k11 Art Space in Wuhan (2015), among others.

Tao Siqi has also exhibited her art in numerous group shows at various venues worldwide, including "Deep! Down! Inside!" at Hales Gallery in New York (2023), "F*ck Art: The Body & Its Absence" at the Museum of Sex in New York (2022), "Nine Lives" at Fortnight Institute in New York (2021), "Right Behind Your Eyes" at Capsule Shanghai in Shanghai (2019), and more.

The unusual subjects depicted in Tao Siqi's paintings, such as a hazy, dusty blue fountain, the gentle portrayal of a metallic weapon, and a melting snowman, surpass their mere representations, encapsulating the interplay between reality and illusion. Grounded in her acute observation and keen sensitivity to the contemporary era, her creations aspire to evoke personal emotional responses by crafting, extending, and deconstructing images.

For her exhibition "Deep Water" at Clima in Milan (2022), Tao Siqi delves into the various potential phases of relationships, navigating the intricate currents of diverse emotions and states, encompassing both the emotional and physical realms: from seductive love to manipulative love, from cruel love to tyrannical love. Intending to infuse the paintings with warmth and a subtle undercurrent of tension that intersects with the senses, the artist invites the viewer into a nebulous moment of ambiguity and vertigo.
