Established in 1995, MARUANI MERCIER represents twenty-three contemporary artists and hosts its program of museum-quality historical exhibitions to build on the legacy of several renowned estates.

Artistic Vision and Legacy: MARUANI MERCIER's Genesis and Mission

The gallery showcases both established artists and emerging talents, nurturing artistic dialogue across generations. Collaborating with distinguished art historians and curators, the gallery enriches scholarly discourse through its exhibition catalogs and artist texts. Many of MARUANI MERCIER's artists are featured in international exhibitions, and their work is held in prestigious museums and private collections around the world.

Initially, MARUANI MERCIER's primary focus was on celebrated American artists from the 1980s, particularly those working in painting and sculpture. These artists aimed to capture the aesthetic and social concerns of their era, including figures like Ross Bleckner, Francesco Clemente, Ron Gorchov, Peter Halley, Jonathan Lasker, and Sue Williams.

Beyond Boundaries: MARUANI MERCIER Embracing Diversity and Important Contemporary Themes

As time passed, the gallery shifted its focus to a new generation of artists who employed various mediums to explore contemporary subjects such as history, politics, the environment, and matters of identity and authorship. Notable among them are Radcliffe Bailey, Esiri Erheriene-Essi, Hank Willis Thomas, Lyle Ashton Harris, Jaclyn Conley, and Tony Matelli. They examine themes related to Black history and culture, societal constructs surrounding sexuality and race, social and political aspects of American life, and issues of isolation and impermanence.

Expanding Horizons: MARUANI MERCIER's Gallery Evolution

"MARUANI MERCIER expanded its presence with an additional gallery in Knokke in 2001. In 2018, the gallery extended its footprint with a 15,000 sq ft exhibition space in Zaventem, named THE WAREHOUSE. This space has showcased celebrated exhibitions and provided a venue for artist residencies. MARUANI MERCIER is committed to continuing the exhibition of the artists it hosts across all its galleries.

Since 2018, MARUANI MERCIER has calculated its CO₂ footprint and actively offset it through initiatives in Malawi, Brazil, and Guatemala. The gallery takes pride in being one of the pioneering carbon-neutral galleries globally.
