Renate Graf

Renate Graf, an Austrian artist, was initially drawn to photography through literature and poetry. Her travels to unique locations such as South India, Morocco, China, and Alaska, among others, and her readings have inspired her photographic work. Graf has also created a series of exclusive images in the studio of artist Anselm Kiefer.

She draws inspiration from writers, poets, and filmmakers such as Fernando Pessoa, Wim Wenders, and Jean-Luc Godard. Graf's images exist not only as pictures but also as language, pointing to a particular meaning. She works primarily with film photography and black and white prints, often creating hand-bound books with her images and text. Renate Graf's first solo exhibition in Portugal, The Photographer's chronicles: thoughts become images 1992 | 2019, was presented in 2019 and featured around 180 works from two decades of her travels and experiences. The artist currently divides her time between Paris and Lisbon.
